Lainie was born on 14 December, 2000. She was purchased as a show prospect puppy at 11 weeks old. From the day we brought her home, she was the mouth of the house. She was always the baby, and ruled over the boys. She was intended to be the dog that could do everything. We soon realized that she HATED obedience and stays, but LOVED agility. She performed in both rings, as well as some dabbling in the breed ring as a puppy. She finished her CD, and got one leg of her CDX title. She quickly finished her Novice agility titles, and was able to get over her fear of sharp noises enough to be a great agility dog, finishing her MXJ before the age of six.
At four and a half years old, a routine blood test showed marginally high BUN/Creatinin level. A sonogram revealed that she had less than 25% function of one kidney. Our vet diagnosed Lainie with Juvenile Kidney Disease. Dogs that are diagnosed with this disease rarely live more than a year. Through careful diet, monitoring, and occasional sub-q fluids, Lainie lived another 18 months. On 9 October, 2006 after a severe crash where her BUN was well over 100 after a weekend of IV fluids, we decided to let her go.
Our goal, when Lainie was first diagnosed, was to allow her to be a dog as long as she wanted. We achieved this goal, as Lainie completed her MXJ title less than a month before her death. As much as we worried that she would be upset with getting sub-q fluids, she was more than happy to sit still and get her special cookies, especially since the boys didn't get any.
Lainie had 10 MXJ legs, 3 MX legs, 2 Double-Qs, and 58 MACH points. She was just getting started.
